Skin Health
Interesting facts:
Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in the body and that we shed one surface layer of dead skin cells every 24 hours!
The outward appearance of skin is a really good indicator as to what is going on inside our body. Being the largest organ, it is not surprising to see just how many nutrients and vitamins have an impact on skin health.
What Attacks The Skin?
Free Radicals are the process of oxidisation. Damage by Free Radicals is linked to premature ageing and damage to the DNA of our skin cells.
Examples of free radicals include: a diet high in refined (white) carbohydrates & sugar, cigarette smoke, alcohol, chemicals and pollutants, sunlight and stress.
Free radicals destroy Vitamin A, C & E but can be minimised by supplementation and diets rich in antioxidants (free radical scavengers).
Vitamin A – The foundation of good skincare
Vitamin A is vital for healthy skin and is the one key molecule essential for normal function of all cells of the skin: keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhans cells and fibroblasts. It is the crucial DNA regulator for 300 to 1000 genes and there is no equivalent or alternative to vitamin A!
Scientific research has shown the benefits of using Vitamin A to be:
- Normalises/repairs skin cells
- Stimulates cell turnover providing natural exfoliation
- Makes the top layer of the skin stronger e.g. bit like the roof of a house
- Thickens the epidermis (top layer of skin) so improves appearance of the skin
- Stimulates blood circulation bringing nutrients to the surface
- Natural detoxifier aiding lymphatic flow
- Normalises sebaceous glands (oil production)
- Stimulates collagen and elastin production
- Natural moisturising action
- Aids pigmentation
Other important vitamins & minerals include:
- Vitamins C & E
- Fish Oil
- Zinc
